Around the World in 243 Recipes: Index

Wikipedia recognizes 244 countries. The UN only recognizes 193, which just goes to show how behind the times they are. As I cook my way through these, I'll update the links.

This is one of the most wonderful ideas I've seen yet. Very impressive. If you're looking for inspiration from African countries, I once discovered some interesting recipes on the University of Pennsylvania's African Studies Center website: http://www.africa.upenn.edu/Cookbook/about_cb_wh.html

Good luck with the project. It's really a wonderful idea.

Thanks! I'll check out that website - I have been having trouble finding recipes from African countries.

What a great endeavor! You might also appreciate Mark Bittman's The Best Recipes in the World ...

I think this is such a great idea, and I'm looking forward to seeing the recipes you choose for each of the countries.

You might be interested in a Frugal Gourmet book called "Our Immigrant Ancestors," which covers a good range of countries.

When you get to Norway (my husband is Norwegian :-) ), a good place to start is at Sons of Norway:

Sorry, me again. If I understood correctly that you're a vegetarian then you might also like Sarah Brown's "World Vegetarian Cookbook" published by Penguin/Viking. And when you get to Sweden, consider a smörgåstårta (a sandwich cake) or I have an excellent recipe for a beetroot salad which is great for pinics or a smörgåsbord. My fiancé is both vegetarian and Swedish.
P.S. I put a link to your project on my blog. I hope others come to check up on you too.

Wow! Just checked the comments here - thank you so much for the suggestions!

In turn:

- Yes! I will go look up Best Recipes in the World - that sounds like exactly what I need.

- "Our Immigrant Ancestors" sounds like good reading too - I hadn't heard of that one before

- Sons of Norway is going to keep me busy for a while - why do they like breads and cakes so much in Norway, I wonder. I live for breads and cakes, so this is going to take some reading time. =)

- "World Vegetarian Cookbook" - that's perfect for me! Yes, I am definitely a vegetable-eater. More accurately, perhaps, a bread-eater who occasionally eats spinach. =)

- Bring on the suggestions! I'm particularly lost for Oceania & Carribean recipes - almost all of which involve seafood, for obvious reasons . . .

I wondered if someone had thought of a project like this, and when I looked, I found your blog. When you get round to Iceland, I hope you can find something on my recipe blog that you want to cook: http://icecook.blogspot.com/

I am in the process of writing reviews of Icelandic cookbooks in English, so if you don't find something you like in the blog, one of those books be useful.

Best of luck with your project,
The Bibliophile
